Danish researchers have discovered a way to predict the development of dementia or senile dementia for 10 years before the appearance of the disease. The method is based on the analysis of gender, age and also the differences in certain genes. The findings of a study reported in the journal Canadian Medical Association Journal.

The article indicates that dementia is one of the main causes of disability in older people. To cure this disease is not yet possible, however, it is possible to reduce the risk of its development through prevention. Scientists say that one of the most effective ways of preventing dementia is a constant learning experience. Feeding our brain with new knowledge causes the formation of new neural connections. Very useful to read books and solve crosswords and other puzzles. According to the findings of earlier studies, the tasks train attention, is capable of 29 percent lower probability of developing dementia after 10 years.

In the study Danish researchers stated that the main factors influencing the level of risk the development of dementia are age, gender, and differences in the genes encoding the protein apolipoprotein E.

the Likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and other types of dementia depending on the APOE genotypes, with regard to gender and age

Scientists say that the most common cause of dementia (70% of cases) is the development of Alzheimer's disease, which is about 70% of cases is the cause of dementia. While senile dementia most often affects women. As for apolipoprotein E, one of its variants (APOE4) directly affects the development of Alzheimer's disease.

After Analyzing the data 104 537 people with dementia from Copenhagen, the doctors discovered that the combination of age, gender and variations in the gene APOE let you define groups with the highest risk of developing dementia. In the conclusions the researchers noted that for women and men at age 60 the risk of dementia is 7% and 6%, respectively, for 70 years, the probability is 16% and 12%, and for 80-year-old and older — 24% and 19%.

The Danes are confident that the new analysis method will allow to predict the occurrence of dementia 10 years before the beginning of its development.
