Stanford scientists use Google Glass for autism Source:

A few years ago it seemed that Google Glass, if not become more widespread, there will be at least one step with smart bracelets and smart watches. Consumersim product points be failed, but they have found application in other, sometimes more useful areas. For example, scientists at Stanford University have begun to use Google Glass to help children who suffer from autism.

Autism is a developmental disorder of the nervous system, in which people (usually children aged 3-5 years) observed impaired social interaction, communication with peers and parents, fixation on certain objects, repetitive patterns of behavior, and so on. This violates not just the social sphere, but also the physiology: it inhibits the development of the Central nervous system, the formation of new synapses, the impact on the development of memory, speech, and the acquisition of new skills.

In the study, the experts of Stanford scientists Catalin Voss and Nick Haber has combined facial recognition technology with machine learning. According to Engadget, the new project is called Autism Glass Project. A special program in communication determines the emotion on the face of the interlocutor, and a man in Google Glass gets a hint about what is expressed in the moment. According to psychologists, it helps in the development of social skills.

In the conducted experiment involved 14 children with autism. They had a few days to wear glasses in everyday life. In the end, 12 families out of 14 in the end of the study, said that children were better able to respond to attempts eye contact and even started to conduct simple dialogues, which before the study were not observed. Experts now are focused on more long-term studies, and on exploring how Google Glass affects the child's psyche and influence it at all. In fact, if the system proves effective, it may become a new method of therapy of autism, not based on the work of psychologist.
