Scientists for the first time in the history of the printed trachea on the bio-printer Source:

bioprinting Technology is getting better!

When the first 3D printers, very few people could even imagine how far will this technology. Of course, the usual means for three-dimensional printing has found its application in the manufacture of various equipment and even the construction of houses. However, doctors have come up with quite a different application of 3D printing. For a long time already, you «charge» in this particular cell, but to print on this printer full bodies, very few managed. One of the pioneers, the scientists are of the (Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine — WFIRM), who first reported the use of bioprinting to create a fully functional trachea.

How to print on a 3D printer

Previous attempts to create tissue of the trachea had many restrictions, mainly because they were focused only on the use of cartilage. The design of the trachea, created by scientists from WFIRM is unique in that it was established immediately given the fact that this will be a full on — that is, there are areas of cartilage and smooth muscles. As a frame used biodegradable material, which is applied to the hydrogel containing human stem cells. They can divide and become different cell types. In this case, the stem cells differenciate in two different types — the chondrocytes (including formed cartilage) and myocytes (base smooth muscles).

In this part of the resulting cartilage — rigid to provide mechanical support for the future of the authority and to prevent «collapse» and part — is soft, giving, along with smooth muscles some movement. Muscles also connect the ends of the cartilaginous rings, providing flexibility to reduce airway. If you are into print, is recommended . There are regularly published news on the subject and not only.

To do this, scientists tried to print a trachea, but the problem was that they took only one material that is not strong enough to support the airway open, but it does not provide the necessary flexibility. Our bioprinting method provides a combination of flexibility and strength required to simulate a real tissue of the trachea. — said Sean Murphy, PhD, lead author and associate Professor of regenerative medicine WFIRM.

Why do we need artificial trachea

The Trachea is a hollow tube, which is made of cartilage and smooth muscle tissue supporting the airway. Tracheal stenosis — this is an abnormal narrowing of the trachea that can be caused by prolonged intubation, inflammation and trauma or it may be a congenital anomaly. The main treatment of this condition, which is life-threatening, are a surgery, but to completely restore patency of the trachea is very difficult.

The Approach of WFIRM scientists combines three specially designed technology: medical visualization of the trachea of the patient, the use of hydrogels intended for the differentiation of stem cells and polymeric scaffolds that mimic the biomechanical properties of specific body. This way you can create the trachea «for a particular person» with all its anatomical features. Of course, while transplantation of the trachea has not yet taken place because of the need to conduct additional studies (to start in laboratory animals). But the already existing result is encouraging.
