How intermittent fasting affects life expectancy Source:

Starvation. Benefit or harm?

For the most part, all diets aimed, as a rule, the reset (or set, if we are talking about sports nutrition) weight or prevention of certain complications. For example, it is known that the malfunction of the pancreas, gallbladder or ulcer is assigned a particular type of food. However, there is a practice called «intermittent fasting». On the influence of periodic runs a lot of very conflicting information and researchers from the United States decided to check how it affects the human body. And the result is quite surprising.

Useful if intermittent fasting

Two new studies give an idea about long-term consequences of this type of fasting on human health. If you believe the conclusions that fasting for just one day a month over several years can increase life expectancy and improve the condition of the cardiovascular system.

Such a diet is, undoubtedly, still in fashion today. From standard diet 5:2 (5 days eat 2 days fast), to more extreme , when a person is prescribed practically nothing there. And one of the key questions remaining unanswered, is associated with a long-term impact of diet on the human body. And if you are a regular but unanswered questions you have will be less. Although several studies have been conducted on animals, studying the biological effects of starvation, and several short-term human studies, scientists still don't know what happens to the human body when it is sequentially subjected to periodic starvation for several years.

To try to figure out the long-term effects of starvation, a team of scientists from the heart Institute (Intermountain Healthcare) salt lake city, Utah, tracked more than 2,000 patients for nearly five years. Patients were included in the study during catheterization procedures, and then for several years was observed to detect the cardiovascular system. The uniqueness of the study lay in the fact that the majority of the participants were members of a religious movement, one of the tenets of which were instructed to refrain from eating food for 24 hours on the first Sunday of each month.

The Results were much more interesting than anyone expected, — says one of the researchers, Benjamin Horne. After five years of observation of these ordinary starving showed a 45 percent lower mortality rate than those who did not starve. This is another example of how we find that regular fasting may lead to better health and increased life expectancy.

The Second study the long-term effects of fasting on myocardial infarction and heart failure revealed no less interesting patterns. The obtained data showed no differences in the incidence of myocardial infarction between those who fasted and those . However, a group of hungry people showed a 71% lower incidence of heart failure compared to the other group of subjects.

We believe that intermittent fasting about a day once a month for decades causes the body to activate the mechanisms of regeneration and to mobilize all systems of the human body due to a stressful situation.

Of Course, this finding is not wholly reliable. In particular, some colleagues have criticized Mr. Horne and his team for not the most obvious choice of the participants. For example, indicates that deeply religious people «lead a completely different lifestyle compared to the average American». They do not smoke, do not drink alcohol and a little more physically active. And this makes perfect sense. And the researchers themselves do not hide the fact that their data require verification on a more extensive group of people. What they plan to do in the near future.
