Russian scientists: Apophis could fall to Earth in 2068 Source:

In 2068 on the Ground can fall off the asteroid , says a report prepared by scientists of the Department of celestial mechanics St. Petersburg state University. The report are going to be on the Royal readings, which will be held in late January in the MSTU. N. Uh. Bauman. In this work it is also noted that in 2029, an object much closer to Earth — our planet with an asteroid will share only a few tens of thousand kilometers.

The Asteroid 2004 MN4 was first discovered by American scientists from the Observatory Kitt Peak in 2004. A year later he was given the name Apophis, in honor of the evil ancient Egyptian God Apophis (in Greek pronunciation — Άποφις, Apophis), according to mythology, living in a dark underworld.

Almost immediately after its discovery, scientists began to make predictions about the probability of collision of the object with the Ground. In 2004 scientists suggested that the probability of Apophis to the Earth in 2029 would be 1 to 45. Some time later, radar observations have ruled out the possibility of collision in 2029, but, due to inaccuracies of the initial data there was a probability of collision of this object with our planet in 2036 and subsequent years.

Updated data about Apophis was obtained by the space Observatory "Herschel". And if according to the previous estimates of the diameter of the object was about 270 meters, according to new data, the diameter of Apophis is equal to 325 ± 15 meters.

Russian specialists have prepared a new report on this subject to present it in the course readings on cosmonautics, which will be held in late January.

In the new study, Russian researchers found that in 2068 Apophis may indeed fall to the Ground. At least, that's what convergence experts call the most dangerous of the awaiting planet in the foreseeable future.

The report by Russian scientists reported that in 2029 the asteroid to get together with the Earth — the distance will be only about 38 0000 kilometers, which is about 10 times smaller than the distance from Earth to the moon.

"This convergence causes large scattering of possible trajectories, among them there is a trajectory, containing the convergence 2051 year. Corresponding to resonant returns contain many (hundreds of) available collision of Apophis with the Earth, the most dangerous — 2068", — was quoted by RIA Novosti one of the theses of the report.

A Rendezvous of our planet with small celestial body is also expected in 2044, when Apophis will approach the Earth is 16 million kilometers. In 2051, the range is 760 thousand. And in the 2060-m – 5 million miles.

According to scientists, Apophis could change the orbit so that in 2068 movement trajectory will intersect with the orbit of the planet, which can lead to collision. For such a scenario in the moment of rapprochement with our planet in 2029 the asteroid "to pass through "the keyhole" — a very narrow region of space. To similar forecasts came before, but at that time it was about the collision of asteroid with the Earth in 2036, in the subsequent study of the object, this risk is eliminated.
