Scientists have uncovered a crime committed 33 years ago Source:

Scientists who study the remains of ancient people, there's plenty of evidence that thousands of years ago members of the species Homo sapiens brutally killing each other. For example, this is evidenced by the bones found during the Second world war in a Romanian cave Cioclovina — his skull had traces of several serious injuries. A long time researchers could not exactly pinpoint the exact cause of death, but thanks to modern methods of forensic science, crime finally managed to uncover.

For more than 70 years of studying the skull with two serious injuries, the researchers had to make several hypotheses about the causes of death of its owner. Some scientists believed that the skull was damaged after a man's death — possibly during research. There was also a version that the man died after falling on his head the caveman of the stone. Version murder still seemed more plausible, and a group of scientists from the University of Crete found strong evidence in its favor.

Solved the crime years ago

To establish the nature of the damage, the researchers created a copy of the head from a material that simulates the properties of real bone. Subsequently, they dropped them from different heights and hit with a baseball bat, and even a piece of volcanic rock, which could be the murder weapon. Strikes in two positions: when the artificial head was leaning against a solid surface (the blow could be inflicted when the victim was already lying on the ground), and upright, if he is a man on his feet.

the Consequences of a blow with a baseball bat

Using computed tomography, they found that around the fractures shows no signs of healing, that is the version that the victim was injured, and then recovered completely eliminated. The theory that the injuries were inflicted after death is also excluded — in this case, bones would be old and dry, and the fractures would have a sharp edge. In the case of the found remains, the bone fragments gradually leaked inside, indicating that the presence of soft brain tissue inside the skull at the time of death.

Causes of traumatic brain injury

According to scientists, the first injury was sustained after the fall of ancient man to the ground with his own height. But the second, depressed fracture, was made with a blunt object after impact, the shards of the skull flew in the back of the skull, which suggests that the man was found with his killer face to face. The blows fell on the right side of the human head, therefore, it is assumed that the killer was left-handed.

In today's world, if I had to determine the cause of death of this person as a forensic scientist, I would say that the person died from traumatic brain injury (as the brain would be damaged from shock) and that it was a murder — Elena Craniate, an employee of the University of Crete.

Most interesting is that this is not the most terrible murder ancient times. In April, we wrote about the Neanderthals, who due to the sharp climatic changes were forced .
