How did life originate on Earth? Source:

How did life on the third rocky planet orbiting an unremarkable star in the center of the Solar system? People seek the answer to this question throughout its history. But only in recent decades, scientists have made progress in understanding the mechanism of the origin of life in the oceans. It may seem that something as complex as life must be incredibly rare phenomenon and that its occurrence probably took a lot of time. But in 2015, scientists have proved that life appeared on Earth 300 million years earlier than they thought. This means that after our planet was formed, it only took 400 million years to the first life forms. Thus four hundred million years – a blink compared to the 4.5 billion years of existence of our planet.

What you need for the origin of life?

When scientists try to answer the question about how life appeared on our planet, the first thing you should pay attention to is time. We know that the Earth was born 4.5 billion years ago, and the age of the first fossil remains discovered in Western Australia is 4.1 billion years old. Does this mean that life on the third planet from the Sun was born almost immediately?

The authors of the work, which was published in the journal five years ago, I believe that with the right ingredients of life formed very quickly. Speaking of the right ingredients, it is important to understand that the main ingredient – at least in the case of rocky planets like the earth – is water. But on our planet, as it turned out, water was present from the beginning.

It Should be noted that the presence of water is so important for the development of life that many astronomers in search of life on other planets in the truest sense of the word “follow the water». That's why today, scientists are sending missions to the icy moons of the gas giants, Europa, moon of Jupiter and Enceladus, a moon of Saturn. Both satellites are covered with a shell of ice under which there is liquid water. Read more about how scientists will look for life in the Solar system .

the Early Earth was a great chemical laboratory.

the First bacteria

So what managed to find the scientist in Western Australia? The discovery turned out to be cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. Possible fossils have been discovered in rocks whose age is about 3500 million years. Although commonly referred to as blue-green algae, cyanobacteria in fact, algae are not. Cyanobacteria and bacteria is prokaryotic life forms. Basically this means that their cells do not have organelles (tiny structures within cells that perform specific functions) and do not have separate nuclei, their genetic material mixed with the rest of the cell. This feature is typical of bacteria and archaea.

All other forms of life on Earth, including these algae, are composed of eukaryotic cells with organelles and genetic material contained in one place (the kernel). But why bacteria, you ask? The fact that bacteria (and archaea) – hardy creatures. They thrive in hot, cold, salty, acidic and alkaline environments in which most eukaryotes are dying. And prokaryotes are known – the earliest forms of life on Earth. It was simple creatures that feed on the carbon compounds in the early oceans of the Earth. Striped, winding marble patterns on the surface of some water – nothing like the drawings of striped mass of blue-green algae.

But over time evolved and other organisms, using solar energy, together with such compounds as sulfides to generate energy. Then cyanobacteria went even further: they began to use water in photosynthesis, releasing oxygen as a by-product. Over time in the Earth's atmosphere had enough oxygen to ensure the evolution of the organisms that are metabolizing oxygen.

However, the understanding of the processes leading to the origin of life, is complicated by the biology. The earth today is a little similar to the atmosphere of the early Earth in which life evolved; it was almost restored by the bacteria, vegetation and other life forms that have acted on it for many eras. Fortunately, the Solar system has preserved for us the many natural laboratories where we can study the raw ingredients of life – volatiles, organics, and chemical processes leading to life. We can also find on Earth direct evidence of the interaction of life with the environment and changes that have transformed life . When we understand exactly how life evolved on Earth, we will be a lot easier to find life beyond.
